PETALING JAYA – Over 2,000 participants joined the Walk for the Autism 2015 held today at Citta Mall, Ara Damansara which aimed at raising funds for NASOM, as well as to raise awareness on autism.
Autism is a lifelong development difficulty that affects how an individual relates, communicates and interacts with other people as well as how they perceive the world around them. They face deficits in social communication/ interaction and have restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour or interests.
It is a spectrum disorder in which their symptoms and severity vary widely across the core chracteristic symptoms. This means, while all individuals with autism share certain similar difficulties, these symptoms affect their lives differently. No two individuals with autism share similar degree of difficulties.
In his speech, NASOM Chairman, Bistamam Siru Abdul Rahman said, NASOM has been organising the walk as its annual event for 5 (five) consecutive years.
“Today, NASOM celebrates the day with a unique fundraising and awareness events in honor of autism awareness where we they helped shine a light on our autism community to fellow Malaysians.”
NASOM’s mission from the event is to develop and implement strategies which cultivate increasing community partnerships, while fostering financial support for the treatment and intervention of autism through behavioural and relational development programs.
Walk for Autism has another benefit to the autistic community — it gives families and individuals with autism a chance to bond not just between each other, but also with the community-at-large, and feel like a very real part of that community.
“We have been privileged to have Danajamin Nasional Berhad as the main sponsor for the walk, and we hoped to be able to work together for many more years to come” and added that the funds raised from the walk will be channelled to the wellbeing of the autistic students and the centers. NASOM currently has 19 centers nationwide and around 500 students ranging from 3 years old to 30 years of age.
Congratulating NASOM on the walk, Danajamin Nasional Berhad Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Nazri Omar said, “Danajamin feels most privileged to be here today to help in a small way, to ensure that these special members of our society are given due opportunity and provided the necessary support to further develop themselves, so that they too can lead a productive and fulfilling life. I am so delighted to see the recognition of the 'walk' initiatives and the responses it received from the public at large.”
Nazri further added, “Danajamin is committed to making corporate social responsibility a cornerstone of our organisation as we believe that a company’s growth must be in tandem with its efforts to improve society. Our continuous involvement with NASOM signifies Danajamin’s commitment to make both small and significant steps towards the creation of a better society. Despite how broad the spectrum is, if you are connected to autism in any way, you are a part of our family. And like any family we have to look out for each other”.
